For one thing, the acting was...bad. The people playing Edward and Bella kept stuttering and gasping, and judging by their expressions and the tones of their voices, I think all of their problems could have been solved if they'd just had a thing of Ex-Lax handy. They seriously looked constipated. And Edward is supposed to be intense, but for some reason, the intensity came out at the wrong times. He came off kind of creepy and stalker-y and annoying. If I'd been Bella-in-the-movie, I'd have written him off as mentally disturbed and walked away.
Also, Edward's hair was irritating enough in itself. It looked like he'd stuck his finger in a light socket and then used way too much gel to freeze it in place. He was not attractive enough to pull off Edward, and it didn't help that the "vampire" look apparently is the exact same as the "stoned-beyond-reason" look. There was actually a scene where he climbed a huge tree and practically curled up in a fetal position, then started rocking back and forth. I think he was going through withdrawal or something.
That said, I don't think there are many guys who could have pulled off Edward anyway--that's the problem with creating a character that's so much larger than life. Still, since he couldn't act and wasn't attractive, I think the only reason this particular guy was chosen was because he had such a pronounced jaw line. Not many guys have such chiseled features, and that alone probably got him the role.

Bella and Edward gets married [Jacob returns for it], go on a honeymoon, make out, Bella gets pregnant. Edward wants to get it out of her but Bella refuses. They return to the house for Carlisle. Rosalie stands on Bella's side, wanting the baby, but the rest of the Cullens disagree. Jacob arrives at the Cullen's home, thinking at Bella had became a vampire and wants to deal with the Cullens. He gets a shock when he sees Bella, with an hugely inflated stomach and haggard face; and Edward with his tortured and half-crazed eyes. He leaves his pack when they want to kill Bella to kill the foetus inside her, Seth and Leah follow him. Bella starts drinking human blood to satisfy the foetus' thirst and feels better after it. The foetus grows swiftly, and soon starts breaking her bones. A few days later, as she tries to get a cup from the ground, the placenta detached. I shall skip the details. >< So the baby is out, and Bella is turned into a vampire to save her life. The baby is named Renesmee, a mixture between Renée and Esme, and becomes Jacob's imprintee, who starts calling her Nessie. Renesmee has a special ability to show others what she wants by planting images in their heads. She grows swiftly, and is one day seen by Irina, who assumes is a immortal child. Irina decides to go to the Volutri. Alice sees it and the Cullens decide to get witnesses to witness the growing of Renesmee so as to prove that she is not an immortal child, as immortal children stay frozen and do not grow. Alice and Jasper run away from the Cullens, and Bella finds a name and address in her book that Alice had left for her, and asking her to destroy it. The Cullens splits up, finding their friends and sending them back, where Bella, Edward and Renesmee try to convince them to stay. Bella finds a chance to escape and goes to the address that Alice had given her, soon finding out that she had wanting her to get fake documents for Renesmee and Jacob to escape if they would die. The Cullens gather as much witnesses as they can while Bella learns how to fight and that her "supernaturally thick skull" was a kind of shield. She practices stretching it to protect others. The day comes and the Volturi arrive, bringing along witnesses of their own. Bella finds out that she can stretch her shield to protect everyone. When proven that Renesmee is not an immortal child, Caius tries to find accusations, and ends up killing Irina. Aro has a better reason that no one knows what Renesmee would become as she is the first of her kind, or so they thought, and that people may still be in danger. While the three counselled, the Volturi guards try to attack but in vain. Alice arrives with a boy and his aunt. The boy, Nahuel, was a half-vampire, half-human as well, proving that Renesmee would pose no danger and that she would reach maturity in 7 years. Having nothing to accuse the Cullens, they flee.
